Jens: Kerstin, you travel a lot and you are in “action” – what place does the topic of “health” hold in your life? Do you have a personal health philosophy?

Kerstin: I try to eat and act as healthy and balanced as my lifestyle allows. Since it is hard to practice regularity in my busy life, I live “completely organic” at home and therefore I can be sinful occasionally when I am on the go. That is basically also my philosophy: “Everything in moderation- dogmatism is unhealthy, joy of living is healthy!”

Jens: When you have very little time, what do you eat? Do you have a favourite snack?

Kerstin: At the moment I am all about green smoothies! My fridge is full of fresh leafy greens, salads and herbs. I mix them with fruit in the morning and that makes me feel full until the afternoon. It is quick and extremely healthy. Unfortunately, I am also into chocolate sometimes (laughs).

Jens: When you have very little time, how do you keep yourself fit?

Kerstin: My minimum yoga program in the morning consists of meditation, a special breathing technique and the headstand. That is a must, no matter how little time I have.

Jens: How and when did you take your first steps towards exercise? Was yoga your first exercise passion?

Kerstin: No, I have always been very athletic. As a child, I was a gymnast. Later I competed as a swimmer in international competitions. I only came to yoga in my early 20s.

Jens: What significance does yoga have in your life today?

Kerstin: I attribute a lot in my life to yoga – it has changed me completely in a positive way. Physically, mentally and ethically, I have simply become “better”. Healthier and happier. Also my love for yoga has led me to establishing my company.

Jens: How did your first yoga retreat with your company come about “be-better”?

Kerstin: Actually, I founded my company AFTER my first yoga retreat in order to have a professional setting where I can offer yoga holidays. The other areas of “be-better” emerged from it, for example through my support for charities such as “School for Life” currently. By the way, at this point I would like to ask for support urgently on a specific occasion – more information at http://www.school-for-life.org

Jens: How and where do you carry out your yoga retreats?

Kerstin: In the most beautiful places in the world. This year, for example in Schlüßhof near Berlin, in the Fürstenhaus am Achensee and in Lycia in Turkey. You can find all information at http://be-better.eu/yoga/dates.aspx

Jens: What memories does a person who participates in one of your retreats take home with them?

Kerstin: I always get great satisfaction, happiness, a very conscious body awareness and above all FUN doing yoga as feedback! Many of my students keep coming back which I am very happy about. That’s why I have set up an additional feedback area on our website where students can exchange thoughts.
I‘d happy if I can welcome you!
SUN, Kerstin

Interview with Personal Trainer Nikki Stalder – Fit For The Summer

nikki_stalder_logo

Interview mit Personal Trainerin Nikki Stalder (www.nikkistalder.ch)

Nikki, when and how did start with sport?

On ski and on the tennis court when I was 4 years old

Which athletic goals have you pursued?

The goals of my clients. Personally, I have never pursued any high performance athletics. I’m not that competitive. However, I try everything, even jumping out of a plane with a parachute on my back.

When did you decide to pass on your passion and knowledge – was there a crucial experience?

One of the key points was when I moved from Australia to Los Angeles in 1997. I was always very athletic and loved sports. California is the Mecca of Fitness and Beauty. It’s where I studied and got my certification as Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist. My empathy for people and to help them achieve their fitness goals was crucial in my decision to make it my profession, as well as my enthusiasm for sports of any kind. Furthermore, one is almost forced to keep a healthy lifestyle in L.A.

What do you recommend people who want to get in shape for the summer?

A combination of HIT (High Intensity Training) and Interval Training 3 x per week. Train as many muscle groups in one exercise as possible, jump rope or sprint in between times to keep the heart rate up to burn maximum calories. (This way you burn calories also after the workout). Eat carbohydrates only in the morning, and drink lots of water. Then like the saying goes, eat like a peasant at dinner time, like soups, lots of fresh vegies, fish and chicken.

Are your boot camps also suitable for beginners – what do they look like for the different levels of experience?

From old to young and fit to not so fit. Everybody can and should participate. An exercise is always 60 seconds and one can work as hard as one likes. The exercises can easily be adjusted to every level of experience. It’s like circuit training and I’m the drill sergeant. Smile

Which words of wisdom would you give to somebody who wants to start with a fitness program?

Start slowly and increase the workload constantly, not every 3 months but every week. Every workout should be a challenge. ‘To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done.’ – Anonymous

Arnold Schwarzenegger, still the most popular icon in the field of fitness, now has his own museum. Earlier this year, I have read an article about the bronze statue, which is now placed in front the house of his birth in Thal, Austria. Since yesterday, the museum is open for visitors.

For those who have no idea where the village “Thal ” is, check the map below:

Promotional video from “Reebokfitness” on Youtube:

Interview with Jutta Schuhn about the Innovation from Reebok, the “Easy Tone Step”. Jutta is a Reebok Fitness instructor and consultant, as well as an outstanding presenter and TV host.

Jens: Jutta, could you please give us an update about the new approach of the “Reebok Easy Tone Step”?

Jutta Schuhn: The new approach is the construction of the tool which makes it suitable for various workouts and target groups. With the two air chambers(=pods), in which you can control the air stream in an on and off mode, you may use the Easy Tone Step both as “normal” step (airflow off) and as balance trainer if you switch the airflow on. Like this you achieve a highly effective core workout with integration of the intrinsic muscles. You can train with the pods pointing up or down, which makes the step a real versatile training tool. Additionally, you can attach a tube at the side of the step.

Jens: For whom and for which kind of classe would you recommend the new training tool?

Jutta Schuhn: Because of the multiple adjustments you can use the Easy Tone Step for all kind of classes. Additionally, you have a new challenge for strength classes and for coordination classes for senior people.

Jens: How would you advise someone who has bought the product and who would like to train at home with the Easy Tone Step?

Jutta Schuhn: I would definitely recommend to train with a combination of cardio and strength training. You can include stability components into cardio or strength classes and challenge like this the coordination additionally. Soon a DVD for home fitness training will be published.
